The 'Cut & Blind' EP is a new addition to my small collection of Joseph Arthur rarities. This 4 track EP was released in Summer 1996 by 'Sell My Soup Records', Atlanta via Box, Wiltshire. It represents Joseph's first real venture into the music recording business. The tracks appearing on the CD are: "Daddy's on Prozac", "Porcupine", "Pick up the phone", "Mikel K". The Band is listed as: Joseph Arthur - Guitar & Vocals, Martyn Baker - Drums & Percussion, Simon Edwards - Bass.
It's interesting to contrast the more minimal instrumentation and production of these early recordings with the versions that appeared later on the full length albums 'Big City Secrets' and 'Come To Where I'm From'. Of the more notable changes, "Pick up the phone" was renamed to become "History" and the harmonica strains on "Mikel K" were replaced by the drones of a hurdy-gurdy.
I particularly like the raw energy of Joseph's vocals on this EP and the crazy cartoonish characters he drew for the cover artwork.
